CHAPTER NINETEEN

hayden

“Tristan?” The door is slightly ajar. This is the time we agreed on, so I go ahead and push the door open all the way and walk inside. I’m not greeted by Roxy, which is weird, but then I see Tristan stepping out from the hallway.

“Hey.” God, he looks good. Admittedly, I give him shit about his wardrobe, but no one wears basic black like he does. Tonight, he’s wearing a simple black button-down, rolled up to the elbow, with a pair of jeans that cling to his muscular thighs and make me whimper with want.

This can’t be real.

His smile tells me it is, though, as he walks to me, both of us uncertain about how to greet each other as we awkwardly stand there. “Thank you for coming.”

“I mean, this is where I would normally be anyway.” I look around. “Except I’m usually greeted by a furball.”

He grins and then gestures to the backyard. “Roxy is out in her new fenced-in yard. Don’t worry, I made sure she has her favorite toys, food, and plenty of water. But I thought for our first date, maybe it should just be us.”

“This is really happening then?” I say it like a question and immediately feel stupid for allowing myself to voice my thoughts out loud.

His slow grin and patient look is enough to melt my nerves away. “Yes. First date. The first of many, and hopefully someday, we can leave my place.” He motions to the kitchen table I now see has two plates and takeout containers. “But for now, I think this could work.”

My nose leads me to the table, and my stomach growls when I realize it’s tacos I’m smelling. “Tacos?”

He nods and pulls the chair out for me to take a seat. I decide to not be difficult for once and do just that. He moves over to the kitchen counter, grabbing something before dropping a bag in front of me. “And gummy worms, of course.”

“Tacos and gummy worms.” My head swivels toward the living room. “And a horror movie?”

He grins, placing tacos on our plates. “Of course. Although . . .”

“No clowns,” I say with a devilish smirk, nearly laughing at the thought of my big bad cop being terrified of clowns.

He pretends to shudder as he takes a seat across the table. “Yeah. I thought maybe the newer Amityville Horror. I haven’t seen that one yet.”

“Ryan Reynolds, shirtless. Sign me up.” I take a bite of taco, a happy moan falling from my lips as an angry growl escapes from Tristan. I laugh, but I also can’t believe he’s jealous. “Easy, boy. I’ll take you shirtless any day.”

“Damn straight.” He takes a bite, and my nerves kick back up.

“This is like every night with us, you know?”

He chews and swallows before taking a drink of water and placing his glass back on the table to give me his full attention. “But now, we know it’s an actual date though.”

“Why though?”

He cocks his head to the side, clearly confused by my question.
